The Artist

Patricia Duckworth was born in Montreal, Quebec. She studied architecture at Mcgill University. She is a self taught artist who's abilities were recognised at an early age. She strayed from drawing as a teenager, but returned to it during the course of her studies at Mcgill University under the watchful eye of Professor Gentile Tandino, who's ability to transmit his knowledge and wisdom by simply being present  in the room will not be forgotten.

It was during this period that Patricia also discovered the untold pleasures of travelling; she took her watercolor set with her and began to develop her own style of painting, by looking at the world around her.  Her first exhibition took place after a 2 year break from her studies during which time she travelled and painted in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

From there she moved on to oil and finally acrylic, her current medium.

Presently an abstract artist, influenced immensely by the great Gerhard Richter, Patricia's work process straddles the fence between intention and haphazardness, between controlling her medium and letting chance play its role. Her process is a sometimes arduous one of application and removal, which can occupy many months or a single day. She reworks her canvases ruthlessly. Conclusion comes when the successive layers of paint have thoroughly collapsed into one another, when one feels the capacity of the canvas itself has been exhausted and its physicality subverted. What remains is the moment the artist was taken by surprise. The resulting works are complex, dynamic and unanticipated.

Patricia sometimes thinks that she could have just one large canvas in her studio, and work on that for the rest of her life.

" I do not obey any intention, system or trend; I have no program, style or pretention. I love uncertainty, infinity and permanent insecurity. I am not trying to create something harmonious, but rather something complex."

- Gerhard Richter
