Varanasi

"I lived in India from 1993 until 1995, initially working in New Dehli and then backpacking around the country. At the time my medium was watercolor, which is fortunate as it is easy to transport. I used to just set myself up anywhere, painting what I saw. My breakthrough came in Varanasi, a city full of life,  light and shadow. I spent 3 days there and painted "The Feet of the Ghats" in Calcutta from memory about a week later. This painting was the seed of the idea which led me to return to Varanasi for a year in order to paint".
